The European Commission's Director-General for Mobility and Transport, Henrik Hololei, and Israel's Minister for Transport and Road Safety, Israel Katz, met on 27 February.

They discussed transport issues of joint interest as well as how to strengthen the EU-Israel transport partnership. Both sides highlighted the need to continue working closely on issues such as aviation, rail and metro security. The development of greener, more efficient urban transport systems was also discussed. On the issue of road safety, Tel Aviv was mentioned as a good example where projects are successfully using new digital technologies to improve safety.

Finally it was agreed to set up a Transport Dialogue, where issues can be discussed regularly in the future.

Mr. Hololei said: "Israel and the EU already enjoy fruitful transport relations and cooperation, notably with a successful air transport agreement. By setting up a Transport Dialogue we are going to strengthen this relationship.''

Head of Delegation of the European Union to the State of Israel, Ambassador Lars Faaborg-Andersen said: "The EU and Israel have so much to learn from each other. Europe is a world leader in smart and efficient integrated transport networks, carrying millions of commuters every day. Israel is a world leader in technologies which are increasingly influencing the future of transport. This close cooperation will benefit all of us".
