The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Republic of Korea (RoK) is calling for 50 talented college and graduate student-applicants to participate in the Model European Union 2020 simulation, co-hosted by the EU Delegation to the RoK, and the three Jean Monnet EU Centres of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), Yonsei University and of Korea University. The MEU2020 will take place on Friday 30th, October 2020, at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, as a full day event.
Some key dates and points to consider:
The Model EU simulation is open to students from all over the RoK who are interested in learning more about global issues, primarily the role and contribution of the EU to addressing important subjects of European and international interests. The MEU2020 will focus on climate and environment and will simulate the working methods of the Council of the European Union (EU). The role of the Council of the EU: Voice of the EU Member States governments, adopting the EU laws and coordinating the EU policies. For more info about this EU institution, please visit https://europa.eu/european-union/about-eu/institutions-bodies/council-eu_en). Climate change is one of the most pressing global issues of our times. In light of its global relevance and the priority that the EU has assigned to tackling its effects, it has been chosen as the topic of the MEU2020. Moreover, this year (2020) marks a significant milestone in the calendar of implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate and October would have been the month of the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference on climate (UNFCCC, COP26).
The MEU 2020 simulation invites 50 talented students to play the role of two EU Commission representatives, Secretariat of the Council of the EU representatives, national ministers for environment and climate change of the 27 Member States of the EU, plus ten journalists and more interested parties.
Interested students should submit their CV and a 2-minute video in English. The selection criteria will be based on the students’ motivation, good command of English, and prior participation in similar simulations / role plays.
Selected students will learn more about the EU, its structure, procedures, dynamics and EU policies and initiatives to tackle climate change. It will also be a great opportunity for the participating students, as they prepare for the MEU2020, to meet with diplomats from Member States of the EU. The Delegation of the EU to the RoK will be part of the voting jury in charge of selecting the three best performing students and sponsor their participation in a European University’s summer school for two weeks. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation signed by the EU Ambassador to the RoK.
The Model European Union was initiated in early 2007 and is a simulation of EU political and legislative procedures. Some major topics in past events include ‘Fight against Climate Change’ and ‘Privacy in Electronic Communications’. The latest Model European Union simulation held in the RoK, hosted by the EU Delegation to the RoK and the HUFS, took place in May 2019, and focused on the working methods of the European Council while the theme of debate was migration.
