High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini met today with the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, María Fernanda Espinosa.
The High Representative and the UNGA President confirmed their determination to uphold multilateralism with a strong UN at its core and welcomed the steps taken in the UN reform process, where the EU continues to advocate for a more effective UN.
High Representative Mogherini and President Fernanda Espinosa exchanged views on climate issues, UN peacekeeping operations and gender policy, also in view of the High Representative’s participation in the High-level event on "Women in Power" in the margins of the session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) next week in New York.
They discussed the latest on migration, the UN Global Compacts on migration and refugees and their implementation, but also the positive triangular cooperation with the African Union, IOM and UNCHR.
Finally, they reviewed the current situation in Venezuela, with a specific reference to the concrete actions taken by the International Contact Group launched by the EU and several Latin American countries, highlighting that the solution to the ongoing crisis can only be a peaceful, political and democratic one.
