On 7 February 2018 the Office of Prime Minister al-Abadi hosted an event "EU-Iraq: a partnership for a better future" to present the new EU Strategy for Iraq. The Iraqi side was represented by the Prime Minister's Deputy Chief of Cabinet, Dr. Naufel al-Hassan and by the Deputy Minister H.E. Hala Shaker Mustafa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From the EU side, the Head of the EU Delegation to Iraq, EU Ambassador H.E. Mr Ramon Blecua, the Head of the EU Advisory Mission to Iraq, Mr Markus Ritter, the German Ambassador, H. E. Dr Cyrill Nunn and the French Ambassador , H. E. Mr Bruno Aubert, presented various aspects of the EU's commitment to a strong EU-Iraq partnership, which will be underpinned by the entry into force of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in the coming months. The new EU Strategy for Iraq, adopted on 22 January, focuses on the underlying political, social and economic drivers of instability in the country and illustrates the deep commitment of the EU to continue working with the Iraqi people and government for long-term peace, reconciliation and stability in the country.
The event gathered representatives of the Iraqi Government, including the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Council of Representatives, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Oil, the Ministry of Planning, REFAATO, the Mayor of Baghdad, as well as representatives from civil society, think-tanks, academia and the media. Representatives from the international community, including EU Member States also attended the event.
