The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy. The EU Delegation to Iraq represents the European Union in Iraq and, as a diplomatic mission, works closely with the Member State Embassies and Missions represented in Iraq. It ensures the tasks of the EU Presidency both in Baghdad and Erbil. The EU Delegation is the permanent and principal interlocutor of the EU vis-à-vis local authorities, the international community and all other stakeholders for all matters related to EU external action. The EU Delegation strives to ensure the unity, consistency and effectiveness of EU external action in Iraq. It ensures the follow-up of bilateral relations in the political, economic, trade, energy and development areas

We offer

A post of Political Press and Information Assistant. This job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. The successful candidate will serve as support staff to the Political Section and will report to the Head of the Political Section.

Main Tasks

(This list is not exhaustive)

  • Be the focal point for Iraqi and foreign media outlets and journalists.
  • Draft, prepare and distribute press-releases, in English and Arabic.
  • Follow local and international press, focussing in particular on EU activities in Iraq and prepare reports and press summaries.
  • Help deliver press-events and other media related activities.
  • Produce timely, accurate, relevant reporting and analysis on wider developments in the Political Section and social media;
  • Monitor global, regional and local media (including social media) and report periodically, as required, on political news and topical issues.
  • Manage and update the Delegation's website and social media accounts.
  • Enhance the visibility of the EU Delegation in Iraq.
  • Translate from/to English to/from Arabic.
  • Support the administrative work of the Political Section.
  • Assist in maintaining the Political section contacts database.
  • Provide support for the wider Embassy activities as needed.

The successful candidate will work in the Delegation's premises, located in the British Embassy compound, in the International Zone. The working hours are Sunday to Thursday from 08.30 to 16.00 hours though there will on occasion be the need to work outside of these hours.

We look for

A dynamic, motivated and creative individual with proven experience in media related jobs, with an interest in political developments and in EU-Iraq relations.  S/he will join a small team of international and local staff as part of the Political Section to support and further develop the media strategy of the EU Delegation, including regular engagement with local and international media representatives in Iraq. S/he will disseminate information about EU activities and policies using the most appropriate tools, including social media. S/he will enhance the visibility of the European Union in Iraq through targeted and well-defined actions, under the overall supervision of the Head of Delegation.

The applicant must be prepared to operate both inside and outside the International Zone. S/he must be prepared to be photographed and/or appear on television in the course of interpreting during key leader engagement.  Whilst the job will be mainly Baghdad-based, there may be occasional visits to other places in Iraq and/or outside.

Job requirements

Formal education, training and/or equivalent experience

  • Upper secondary education. University degree relevant to the job requirements will be an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years proven professional experience pertinent to the duties announced in this vacancy and in particular to the media related tasks.
  • Excellent knowledge of the media landscape in Iraq.
  • Understanding of political developments in Iraq, EU-Iraq relations and in the work of the European Union Delegation in Iraq.
  • Previous experience working in the public, private or international organisation sectors as Press and Information Officer would be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Language skills

  • High level of proficiency in English, written and oral.
  • Arabic native speaker.
  • Knowledge of Kurdish will be an asset.

Other requirements

  • Prior experience of working in a multi-cultural environment will be an asset.
  • Be a holder of a valid passport.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with respect for others.

Security clearance

This job requires security clearance. The successful candidate will have to successfully attend a security interview prior to his/her appointment.
