Dr Meglena Kuneva shares insights on EU during lecture tour across Indonesia
From 27 May to 5 June 2025, Dr Meglena Kuneva undertook a visit to Indonesia, delivering a series of high-level lectures in Jakarta and other key cities. The tour aims to foster greater understanding about the EU, particularly in the context of EU-Indonesia relations.
Dr Kuneva, a prominent Bulgarian and European stateswoman, brings a wealth of experience to the international stage. She has served as the EU’s Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of European Affairs. Notably, she was also Bulgaria’s Chief Negotiator during the country's accession to the EU—an achievement that remains a cornerstone of her diplomatic legacy.
During her visit, Dr Kuneva addressed diverse audiences at several academic and civic institutions, including the Women’s International Club, BINUS University and Bung Karno University in Jakarta, Belitung Polytechnic in Belitung and Mahasaraswati University in Denpasar. Her lectures drew on her extensive experience in both European governance and international diplomacy, offering attendees unique, first-hand insights into the workings of the EU and its evolving relationship with Indonesia and the broader ASEAN region.
Dr Kuneva’s engagements emphasised the importance of international cooperation, democratic values, and mutual understanding in addressing global challenges. Her visit was warmly received by students, academics and civil society leaders, reinforcing the value of dialogue in building stronger EU-Indonesia relations.
