The 20th European Union (EU) Film Festival “Europe on Screen 2020” ended its 15-day online movie screenings and fringe events on 30 November 2020. A total of 40 European films and a compilation of 3 Indonesian short films, as well as 20 sessions of film talks with international and local filmmakers, have been streamed online and watched by Indonesian audiences across the country.
“This year, Europe on Screen presented 40 films from 25 European countries. We have shown the Indonesian public the diversity of our continent and the creativity of the audio-visual sector. The festival captured Europe’s uniqueness through lively stories with messages that transcend time and borders,” said H.E. Vincent Piket, EU Ambassador to Indonesia. “We also built links between top personalities from the European film industry and film students in Indonesia. I hope that the sharing of experience and knowledge will help these students along their creative paths. Finally, I am happy to announce that Europe on Screen will be back next year,” he added.
Although many miss the cinema-going culture, the Europe on Screen 2020 online edition has received positive reactions from the public. ”The audience’s warm response was beyond our expectation, especially as tickets to watch many of the films were immediately sold out in the first week,” said Meninaputri Wismurti, Europe on Screen 2020 Festival Co-Director. “Various non-screening events also received good engagements from our audiences, creating a hope for current film industry impacted by the pandemic,” added Nauval Yazid, Europe on Screen 2020 Festival Co-Directors.
How About Adolf? – a German film, produced in 2018, nominated as Best Feature Film at the 2018 Cologne Film Festival and directed by Sönke Wortmann – was chosen as the Europe on Screen 2020 closing film. Filled with humour and critical dialogues, this film tells a story about a couple who are planning to name their unborn son Adolf. The film will be streamed until 5 December 2020.
“The German Embassy is proud to present you this year’s closing film, How About Adolf?, as one of Germany's box offices in 2019. It will be a great fit to close the festivities this year and it will definitely make you laugh!” said H.E. Peter Schoof, German Ambassador to Indonesia, at the closing ceremony.
Europe on Screen is also proud to once again organise the Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP). From a total of 170 entries, 9 finalists were shortlisted and had pitched their ideas virtually to a 3-member jury panel during the festival.

Films of the SFPP 2020 winners will be premiered at Europe on Screen 2021.
Back by popular demand, Europe on Screen will hold extra screenings for 12 selected films. Tickets are available on Monday 30 November 2020, yet the film can only be watched starting 16.30 (WIB) and all the screenings in Europe on Screen will end on 5 December 2020.
