Text

Today, the European Union (EU) jointly with the Federal Government of Somalia signed the Financing Agreement of a 42 Million Euro European Union contribution to Somalia Infrastructure Fund (SIF) at an event graced by Deputy Prime Minister, HE Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid, in Mogadishu Somalia. The official signing ceremony was executed by H.E Amb. Gamal Hassan, Federal Government of Somalia's Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, and HE. Ambassador Nicolas Berlanga Martinez, the European Union's Ambassador to Federal Republic of Somalia.

The Road Infrastructure Programme – Somalia is expected to rehabilitate about 355 kilometres (km) of key regional road network in Somalia. The programme will also provide technical assistance to further improve the capacities of road sector government agencies, at Federal and state levels. Improving the road network in Somalia is a double-win: it would not only save lives for the road users but also positively impact Somalia's improving economic growth through better connectivity and trade in Somalia and in the Horn of Africa Region. The programme will contribute to the Horn of Africa Initiative supported by the European Union (EU), World Bank (WB) and African Development Bank (AfDB) that aims to promote regional economic integration that boosts job opportunities for the vast unemployed youth and women in the region.

''The government strongly appreciates the continued commitment and support of the European Union to the government of Somalia and its people. This 42 million  Euro road infrastructure support further builds on the recent European Union State Building budget support to the Federal Government of Somalia.'' Said HE Mahdi Mohamed Gulaid.

During the event, HE. Amb. Nicolas Berlanga Martinez said ''With a contribution of 42 Million Euro, the European Union together with the Government of Somalia is excited that  rehabilitation of key nationally prioritized roads will spur economic growth not only in Somalia but in the Horn of Africa region and these will translate to important social benefits for the people. Crucially, improved roads safety would positively impact access to employment, health facilities, social and education services that are backbone for the fight against poverty in Somalia.’’
