As home to major sea routes connecting Asia, Europe and Africa, the Indian Ocean holds immense economic and strategic importance. It is therefore more important than ever that countries in the region cooperate to face common security threats in the area, both traditional and non-traditional.

Education and training offer new opportunities to deal with the evolving challenges in peacekeeping and crisis management. This requires an advancement in curricula, as well as regional and international exchanges of best practices and lessons learned in order to meet the global need to provide prompt assistance during times of emergency.
