The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Vincent Guérend, together Mr Hamid Muhammad, MSc, PhD, Director General of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture, launched on 18 May 2018 the start of a new EU-funded project in the education sector called "Promoting civil society-led initiatives for inclusive and quality education in Indonesia".

With an EU grant of almost EUR 750,000 (IDR 12 billion), the project will be implemented by Yayasan Penguatan Partisipasi Inisiatif dan Kemitraan Masyarakat Indonesia (YAPPIKA) Action Aid in collaboration with its three partners: Perkumpulan Solidaritas Untuk Demokrasi/ Solidarity for Democracy ( SOLUD) Bima - West Nusa Tenggara, Perkumpulan Lembaga Pengembangan Masyarakat Swandiri (GEMAWAN) Pontianak - West Kalimantan, and Yayasan Bahtera (SANTERA) West Sumba - East Nusa Tenggara for 3.5 years.

"Since 2010 until last year, the EU has been one of the largest partners supporting education in Indonesia with total grants of EUR 350 million (IDR 5.7 trillion). More than 55,000 schools and 7 million students in 108 districts have directly benefited from the EU support. We believe that education is one of the most far-reaching and tangible impact on people’s lives. This new education project will improve the quality standard of education, reduce the dropout rates, and increase the access of girls and children with disabilities to inclusive schools ensuring that no child is left behind," said Ambassador Vincent Guérend.
