EU launches "Our Ocean" Short Story Writing Contest

The Delegation of the European Union (EU) has launched a Short Story Writing Contest "Our Ocean" to inspire actions for safe, secure, clean and sustainably managed oceans. The launch of the contest was marked by a special ceremony in Jakarta on Friday (29/9), graced by visiting European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, and the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Pandjaitan. The contest is supported by Embassies and Cultural Centres of EU Member States.

Oceans cover 75% of the planet’s surface and make the Earth habitable for humankind. Over 3 billion people depend directly on our seas for their livelihoods. But in reality, all of us depend on the ocean: for our water, our food, our climate and our air. The EU and Indonesia are committed to working together to protect oceans worldwide. This is why the EU is hosting the 2017 "Our Ocean" Conference in Malta from 5 to 6 October 2017 and  Indonesia will host the 2018 “Our Ocean” edition.

The writing contest is a contribution to the 2017 global “Our Ocean” conference.

Young Indonesians that are passionate about the ocean and want to write short fiction stories about issues related to it are invited to join the competition. Participants must be Indonesian nationals not older than 26 years who are ready to take the challenge of writing in one of the 24 official EU languages.

The deadline for submission is 10 November 2017.

European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs, Karmenu Vella, said that "Forests are our planet's green lung, but oceans are its blue heart. It is now up to all of us to keep this blue heart beating."

Ten attractive prices are offered. The winner will be invited to Jakarta to receive the award. The top stories will also be published in official websites and social media of the EU Delegation and EU Member States embassies to Indonesia – and beyond.
