The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Indonesia, led by Chargé d'Affaires, a.i. Charles-Michel Geurts, visited the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) headquarters in Jakarta today (3/1) to express EU's solidarity to Indonesia following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake which struck the country's province of Aceh in early December 2016.

The EU Delegation also hailed the work of the PMI. "It is good to see that the PMI is well placed and qualified as a first responder to the disaster. The EU through its humanitarian arm – ECHO – is pleased to support PMI in delivering crucial assistance to the most vulnerable, including the distribution of emergency shelter material and relief items," said Geurts. EU's support of €200,000 was channeled to PMI through ECHO's partner, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). "The earthquake in Aceh is close to our heart due to long engagement with Aceh, from the peace process to the post-tsunami humanitarian aid and reconstruction process," added Geurts.

The EU Delegation was received by the PMI Acting Chairman, Ginanjar Kartasasmita, and team who also took the opportunity to provide an overview of the latest situation in Aceh as well as PMI's response and coordination with the provincial government and other humanitarian partners in the field.
