Consular Protection for EU Citizens in Bhutan

Consular protection is the help an EU Member State can provide to its citizens in case they need assistance abroad. Typically, consular protection can include cases such as:
- A need for emergency travel documents;
- A serious accident or serious illness;
- Relief and repatriation in case of an emergency;
- Being a victim of crime;
- Arrest or detention;
- Death.
In Bhutan, there is no resident diplomatic representation of any of the 27 EU Member States. Most of the EU Member States offer consular assistance from third countries, notably India, Nepal and Bangladesh, although a small number of them have Consuls or Honorary Consuls in the capital, Thimphu.

In the case of Bhutan, where local representation is very limited and no EU Member State has formal diplomatic representation, EU citizens are strongly encouraged to enter into contact with the consular authorities listed in this site, which in most of cases refer to the Embassies/Consulates of EU Member States in neighbouring countries. Furthermore, please note that any EU citizen abroad whose own Member State has no local representation is entitled to receive consular protection from the diplomatic or consular authorities of any other EU Member State.

Please note that the EU Delegation in India cannot provide direct consular assistance and that there is no resident EU Delegation in Bhutan.

- Following the travel advice issued by your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Prior of departure registering through dedicated platforms or when abroad registering with your embassy or consulate.
