The European Union and India have recognised the importance of sustainable development and climate-related initiatives for several years.
In 2004 India became one of the few EU's "strategic partners". Since 2005, the EU-India Joint Action Plan, revised in 2008, aims at realising the full potential of this partnership in key areas of interest to India and the EU.
The European Union and India mark several important anniversaries within a short period- 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, 30 years since the opening of the EU Delegation in New Delhi in 1983, and 10 years of the EU-India Strategic Partnership launched in 2004.
