The Delegation of the European Union does not issue passports or visas. Passports and visas are issued by the Embassy and/or Consulate of each individual European Member State. Please find the contact details of EU Member States and Consulates in India below.
When planning to travel to the EU, as an Indian citizen you will need a valid passport and a visa obtained before arrival.
You will need a passport valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting and a passport which was issued within the previous 10 years.
There are two types of visa – short stay and long stay.
If planning a short stay of up to ninety days in any six-month period of time in an EU country, that is a part of Schengen area, you may apply for a Schengen visa which entitles you to travel to the twenty two EU MS which are members of the Schengen area, as well as four non EU countries (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Lichtenstein). You must lodge the application for a Schengen visa at the Consulate of the country that you intend to visit, or – if you intend to visit more than one Schengen State, the Consulate of the country which is the main destination of the stay (in terms of the length or purpose). If you intend to visit several Schengen States and the stays will be of equal length, you must apply at the Consulate of the country whose external borders you will cross first when entering the Schengen area.
For more information please refer to the Common Information Sheet for Schengen visa applicants in India.
Five EU MS – Bulgaria, Ireland, Croatia, Cyprus, and Romania – are currently not or not yet members of the Schengen area. If you wish to visit any of these countries, you should thus apply for a separate visa at the competent Embassy / Consulate of the relevant country.
If you plan a long-stay to any of the 27 EU MS (i.e. more than ninety days), you may need a national long-stay visa and/or a residence permit. When applying for a national long-stay visa the exact type of supporting documents that are required depend on the rules in the destination country. For specific details please refer to the Embassy or Consulate where you will apply.
