The internet and digital Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are transforming our world rapidly. Both, the EU and India have set up their respective digital priority policies to harness the new services and networks so that they address global societal challenges, while supporting sustainable and inclusive growth.
Since 2001, India and the EU have been working closely together in the area of ICT, promoting modern information society. Recently, in November 2018, the EU adopted a new strategy on India, which reiterates ICT as one of the priority areas of cooperation between the two partners. Besides the effort to link up Digital Single Market with Digital India, we have been engaging with India on a range of issues including ICT market access issues, standardisation, Internet governance and research & innovation. More specifically, under the ICT standardisation we have made considerable progress in mutual areas of interest including 5G, machine-to-machine communications/intelligent transport systems, software defined and virtualised networks and security.
Digital transformation represents a huge potential for socio-economic developments, and is impacting areas as wide as health, education, finances, industry, transport, agriculture, governance, culture and entertainment. Virtually all sectors will be affected by this cross-cutting revolution. In order to enable this revolution, we need to find innovative solutions to possible barriers and hurdles hindering the roll-out of the new technologies, while ensuring that essential values are protected.
