Opening of the First Onshore Carbon Capture and Storage Facility in Europe - Silverstone

The Silverstone facility by Carbfix at Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant was formally opened on 19 June 2025 by the Minister of Energy, Environment and Climate, Mr. Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson.

The Silverstone Project is one of the first recipients of the European Union's Innovation Fund, the project signed a € 3,9 m in 2020.

On Thursday, 16 June 2025, Mr. Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate, formally opened the Silverstone facility by Carbfix at Hellisheiði Geothermal Powerplant.

The Silverstone facility is the first onshore carbon capture and storage facility to be operational in Europe.

The project was among the first recipients of Innovation Fund grants, the project signed a € 3,9 m EU in 2020.

The Silverstone facility uses the Carbfix CO2 storage technology that relies on CO2 mineralisation, which turns CO2 into solid carbonate minerals underground via injection into reactive rocks. The new facility will, therefore, capture and store CO2 emissions from the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant and support Iceland's trajectory towards climate neutrality.

The EU Ambassador to Iceland, Clara Ganslandt, said:

The Silverstone facility is the first onshore carbon capture and storage facility to be operational in Europe and was one of the first projects selected under the Innovation Fund back in 2020 - a highly selective programme. This certainly shows the quality of the facility that will open here today. Silverstone is a great example of the successful and longstanding cooperation between the European Union and Iceland on climate action. - Clara Ganslandt.

The European Union is remains committed to the objectives of the European Green Deal and the EU's Clean Industrial Deal to accelerate decarbonisation, supporting innovative clean-technology and to reach a net-zero economy.

Europe is a global leader in clean technologies with more than one fifth of the world's clean technologies being developed in Europe.
