Seminar on 'An Integrated European Union Policy for the Arctic'

The Arctic States have primary responsibility for tackling issues within their territories, but many issues affecting the Arctic region defy borders (eg. climate change, migratory wild life including fish stocks, shipping, tourism, and telecommunications). Addressing such issues can often be done more effectively through regional and multilateral cooperation.

On 27 April the European Commission and the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy adopted and published a Joint Communication on an integrated EU policy for the Arctic. The policy document outlines key areas where the EU will, in particular, engage over the coming years: climate change and safeguarding the Arctic environment; sustainable development in and around the Arctic; and international cooperation.

Speakers:

Terkel Petersen, senior advisor for Arctic matters at the European External Action Service

Tómas Orri Ragnarsson, Counsellor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Moderator: Page Wilson, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Iceland

The seminar will take place in English and is open to all
