Travel and Study involving Hong Kong, Macao and the EU

All European Union Member States, with the exception of Ireland and the United Kingdom have a unified visa system as part of the Schengen area. Three non-Member States - Iceland, Norway and Switzerland—are also part of the Schengen area and also implement the unified system. Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania are not yet part of the Schengen area, but maintain the same immigration policies as required by Schengen. Liechtenstein has signed up to Schengen but has yet to implement it. Ireland and the United Kingdom maintain independent immigration policies.

Nationals of European Union Member States, and of Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are not only visa-exempt but are legally entitled to enter and reside in each other's countries, following the requirement of the EU's freedom of movement provisions, the European Economic Area Agreement and bilateral accords with Switzerland.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport holders do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area. Other nationals may need a Schengen visa. For more information on this, please check with your travel agent and respective EU embassies/consulates-general. If you are entering Ireland, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania, please check these respective embassies on visa entry requirements.

Schengen visas are only valid and issued by

Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Erasmus+ Programme

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme supporting education, training, youth and sport in Europe for the period 2014-2020. It provides opportunities to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad, and replaces several previous programmes including the international cooperation programmes such as Erasmus Mundus. Hong Kong and Macao are Partner countries of the programme.

European Union Academic Programme (EUAP) Hong Kong

The EUAP is funded by the EU.  In 2012, four local universities (Hong Kong Baptist University, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University) formed the consortium so as to create regional synergies in EU Studies. The EUAP is designed to strengthen EU-Hong Kong relations through academic activities and network building with local, regional and European partners. The EUAP promotes public awareness of the EU as well as its impact on and relationship with Hong Kong. The EUAP promotes academic excellence in EU Studies by building on and further extending existing academic and research activities, and by developing new multidisciplinary activities in the tertiary institutions and for secondary schools in Hong Kong.

European Union Academic Programme (EUAP) Macao

The EUAP Macao is led by the University of Macau in collaboration with the Institute of European Studies of Macau EU Academic Programme. The EUAP is aimed at encouraging greater awareness and knowledge of the EU through support for EU-focused curriculum development and research, outreach activities and academic links. The main objective of the programme is to build a centre of academic excellence with a view to broadening and deepening EU studies in Macao. It will also serve to develop targeted outreach activities to constituencies beyond the academic circle, in order to promote a better understanding and knowledge of EU as a major player in the global system and as a key bilateral partner of Macao. The programme will also strengthen academic cooperation with European universities.

Facebook Page

The main goal of EU Information Centres are: dissemination of information about the EU and its policies; providing assistance to universities and research centres in students’ studies and research works concerning European integration, and promoting students’ participation in debates on European issues. These centres have a wide variety of publications and official materials of the EU institutions, as well as EU bulletins, journals and other EU-related information.
