Award-winning Titles from 16 Countries

Presented by European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, in association with Broadway Cinematheque, the European Union Film Festival 2018 bring 16 award-winning titles to Broadway Cinematheque, AMC Pacific Place and MOViE MOViE Cityplaza from 1 to 18 March.

The Festival will open with a free screening open to all at MOViE MOViE Cityplaza. The opening film is the Swiss  The Divine Order. The film addresses women rights as the protagonists fight for their right to vote. The Festival also includes dramas, romantic commedies, historical films and documentaries. The closing film is the German entry Welcome to Germany which is an endearing comedy about immigration.

We are pleased to announce that Valentin Hitz, director of the Austrian film Hidden Reserves will be visiting Hong Kong to meet with the audience.

The Divine Order - Opening film:
Directed by Petra Volpe, the opening Film The Divine Order is set in Switzerland in 1971 where women were still denied the right to vote. When housewife Nora is forbidden by her husband to take a part-time job, her frustration leads to her becoming the poster child of her town’s suffragette movement. Marie Leuenberger who played Nora won Best Actress at Tribeca Film Festival. Free screening -See below-

 

 

Welcome to Germany - Closing film:

 

The Festival will close with Welcome to Germany directed by Simon Verhoeven. Subsequent to topping Germany’s box office, the film received a nomination for Best Comedy at the European Film Awards. The recently retired teacher Angelika decides, against her skeptical husband Richard’s will, to take in a refugee. Soon afterwards, a whirlwind of complications ensue. The film explores the refugee issue with great sense humour that makes you laugh and think.
