Fourth anniversary of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine

Honduras, 26 February 2026 – On the fourth anniversary of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union in Honduras, together with the Ukrainian diplomatic mission, promoted a public diplomacy agenda focused on academic reflection and cultural exchange.

The European Union Ambassador, Gonzalo Fournier, the concurrent Ambassador of Ukraine to Honduras (residing in Cuba), Iryna Kostiuk, and the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Policy, Pamela Handal, participated in academic forums on the war in Ukraine.

The forums, held in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, were attended by more than 100 International Relations students from the Central American Technological University (UNITEC). Moderated by the students themselves, the meetings explored critical issues such as:
·       The geopolitical and economic consequences of war at the global level.
·       The direct impact of the conflict on the situation in Honduras.
·       The role of diplomacy in humanitarian crises.

In addition to the forums, the French Alliance of San Pedro Sula organised a screening of the Polish film ‘People’ (Ludzie), which tells the story of five Ukrainian women in the chaos of war, offering a human and sensitive perspective on resilience in times of war.

The screening brought together more than 60 attendees, including Honorary Consuls from European Union Member States and members of civil society, strengthening bonds of fraternity and social awareness.

To amplify the message of solidarity, diplomats participated in the most-watched national television forums, Frente a Frente and 30/30, positioning solidarity with Ukraine as a priority issue on Honduras' public media agenda.

It should be noted that the events also featured the participation of César Elvir, Ukraine's proposed honorary consul to Honduras.
