Honduran Human Rights defender and environmentalist Berta Caceres was assassinated on 3 March 2016. Those responsible must be brought to justice.
The European Union has followed the investigation and observed the ongoing trial of those accused of Ms Caceres murder since its beginning.
We expect that the rule of law, human rights and the independence of the judiciary are safeguarded and underline the need for the trial to be transparent and public. The rights to be represented and to access to information, including the families’ right to private representation, are key in this context.
Violence against human rights defenders worldwide will only end if impunity is fought and justice prevails.
