EU Delegation Donates to Vulnerable Individuals in Guyana

On May 7, 2021, Ambassador of the European Union to Guyana, Fernando Ponz Cantó, made a donation of electronic equipment (including laptops, mobile phones, tablets, printers and many others) to the Rotary Club of Demerara. The equipment was part of the reserve library of electronics of the EU Electoral Observation Mission [EUEOM] to Guyana for the March 2, 2020 general elections.

Ambassador Ponz Cantó highlighted that, the donation coincided with the upcoming Europe Day anniversary on May 9. He reiterated that, “the EU makes a point of helping first those most in need. We are very happy to deliver all these materials today, and we hope they will make a difference in the daily lives of the final beneficiaries, particularly so in the Covid19 context, when telecommunications are essential for all, including the most vulnerable”.

Ambassador also referred to Europe Day, “in the run-up towards Europe Day, and in the spirit of EU cooperation, I am very happy and confident that, through the Rotary Club and the other beneficiary organisations, these materials will be useful to improve the daily lives of many Guyanese in need’’.

Outgoing President of the Club, Bhageshwar Murli, and his successor Carey Griffith received the donated items at a simple handover from Ambassador Ponz Cantó at his Residence. The Rotarians highlighted that the equipment will be distributed to a number of organisations inclusive of the Hauraruni Girls Home, the Muritaro Community Library in Upper Demerara River, the Malali Village Community Library in Upper Demerara River, the Enmore Children’s Home and the Mahaica Children’s Home. The Rotary Club of Demerara anticipates that more than 50 vulnerable adults and children will benefit from the donation.
