The European Commission Vice President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, Mr. Jyrki Katainen, arrived in Ghana on 13 June 2019 for a two-day official visit to Ghana. He participated in the first Ghana-EU Business Forum, on 14 June in Accra and delivered the closing remarks alongside Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana.

Mr. Jyrki Katainen held bilateral meetings with Ghana’s Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the members of the Economic Management team in Ghana.  He also delivered a lecture on the EU-Africa Alliance at the Kofi Annan ICT Training Centre on 13th June.

Mr. Katainen held meetings with civil society and the private sector and granted interviews to the media.  He also visited the new terminal of the Tema Port near Accra, which is providing strategically enhanced capacity for international and regional trade.

Opening of Ghana-EU Business Forum
EU Ambassador to Ghana, Diana Acconcia and Ghana's Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen jointly opened the forum

More than 1,000 Ghanaian and European entrepreneurs, national and international financial institutions, Ghanaian and EU civil servants and Ministers of State, met in Accra to deliberate for two days, ways to improve the business climate, improve collaborations, and boost private investments for sustainable jobs in Ghana, thereby contributing to the Ghana beyond aid vision.

This was at the first Ghana – EU Business Forum in Accra from 13 – 14 June. The event was jointly organized with the Ghana Ministry of Finance and it aimed to link entrepreneurs and financiers, so as to boost with innovative financing solutions the creation of sustainable jobs in Ghana.

The Business Forum offered for the first time, opportunity for local and foreign entrepreneurs and businesses to get first-hand information about the External Investment Plan (EIP) guarantees which will be available for them in Ghana. This will help them to plan ahead and improve their investment planning in the country.

The forum was opened jointly by Ghana's Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Diana Acconcia.  It was also addressed by Ghanaian and European entrepreneurs, high-profile representatives from the business community, bankers and financiers as well as political leaders and development partner representatives.

A Business Fair in the margins of the Forum was in place to enable European and Ghanaian exhibitors and Chambers of Commerce to showcase their businesses. Furthermore there was the opportunity for the businesses to have intensive private contact during Business to Business (B2B) meetings.

The forum was on the theme "Boosting investments for sustainable jobs in Ghana"
