WAPIS seeks to provide law enforcement agencies with a modern tool to carry out their important work, namely an electronic system for collecting and sharing information.

It was established following a request by West African countries in 2011, with the critical assistance of INTERPOL. The project has since been supported by the EU throughout its 3 phases (2012-2022) –beginning with 4 pilot countries including Ghana, it now involves 17 countries, supported with a total budget of EUR 37 million by the European Union.
