The Ghana-EU Business Forum held in Accra with focus on investment in non-traditional value chains

The 2nd Ghana-EU Business Forum, which was held in Accra on 3-4 July, was under the theme "Fostering Investment in Non-Traditional Value Chains Under the EU Global Gateway Strategy”.

 

The two-day event provided a platform for robust engagement between policy makers and the private sector from both Ghana and Europe, identifying mutually beneficial opportunities along specific value chains, including ICT/digital, renewable energy, health/pharmaceutical, agricultural, textile & garments and automotive (including electric vehicles).

This forum represents a renewed opportunity for the EU, its Member States and the private sector from Europe and Ghana to engage on their investment agendas in a transparent and inclusive manner with a view to fostering confidence and commitment to a stronger and sustainable partnership. This is another important step in the successful implementation of Global Gateways in GhanaDeputy Director-General of INTPA, Ms Myriam Ferran, said.

The Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Kobina Tahiru Hammond, urged European Union and Ghanaians investors to forge lasting ties with local suppliers to develop a reliable and sustainable supply chain.

EU Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Irchad RAZAALY, underlined that the EU’s is Ghana’s largest trading partner and this Forum will consolidate and strengthen such partnership.

Global Gateway: €32 million European Union support to vaccine manufacturing and pharma in Ghana

During the Ghana-EU Business Forum, the EU launched a €32 million Special Measure on Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies in Africa (MAV+) to support the development of vaccine manufacturing and the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana. This significant investment aims to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare sector and increase access to quality health products.

Through this initiative, the EU will support Ghana in establishing a thriving ecosystem able to produce the needed skilled workforce, strengthen research and development capacities, establish the necessary regulatory system (continuing to support the Food and Drugs and Authority), facilitate technology transfer and build bilateral and multilateral partnerships for vaccine and pharmaceutical production.

The EU’s support to local vaccine manufacturing in Ghana through MAV+ shows the EU’s ability to adapt to rapidly emerging needs and trends, and its strong commitment to support and respond to high political priorities of the Government of Ghana.

Deputy Director-General of INTPA, Ms Myriam Ferran, said. commented: "The European Union is committed to supporting Ghana's development goals, and this investment in vaccine manufacturing and pharma is a testament to our solid partnership; this programme will not only enhance Ghana's healthcare sector but also contribute to the implementation of Global Gateway in a Team Europe spirit and to the growth of the country's economy."

The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, said "We are working together with the EU from the beginning for the successful implementation of the President’s vision to make Ghana become a regional vaccine manufacturing hub. A big thank you to EU for the incredible close collaboration."

Deputy Director-General, Ms. Ferran, together with Team Europe visited DEK manufacturing facility (€5 million EIB investment grant) to kick-off Ghana’s private sector local vaccine manufacturing initiative and to ensure vaccine equity and access.
