A joint EU-UN global programme strives to deliver technical assistance and prevent violent extremism in Kazakh prisons.

In March-May 2020, despite unprecedented challenges of #COVID19, the implementing partners in Kazakhstan delivered trainings to over 80 prison staff. The seminars helped prison officers to improve their capacities to manage violent extremist prisoners, identify solutions to reduce the threat of extremism, and better understand and implement so-called Nelson Mandela rules on minimum standards for treatment of prisoners.

In addition, the programme envisages procurement of the video-conference equipment worth EUR 160,000 to improve the coordination between the central and regional prison administrations and training centre.

“Supporting the Management of Violent Extremist Prisoners and the Prevention of Radicalisation to Violence in Prisons” is an initiative co-funded by the European Union, the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and the Netherlands and implemented by UNODC, UNOCT and UNCTED.
