The European Union in Georgia

 
Welcome to the first edition of the European Union in Georgia newsletter. Issued by the Delegation of the European Union on a bi-weekly basis, it will provide regular and easy access to information on EU activities in Georgia.
 
This edition is dominated with news on EU and TeamEurope response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It covers the quick response activities taken by our projects nationally and locally. These are all part the three EU support packages to Georgia: two totalling over €250 million of non-reimbursable grant support, and a third proposing favourable macro-financial loans of €150 million. Many of this money is already appearing on the ground.
 
The EU has also made statements on the importance of support to vulnerable groups, assisting in economic recovery, as well as personal support to the Government’s actions. Further we have some material published on disinformation activities linked to the pandemic.

    One of the core elements of disinformation is persistence. Sticking to a few comfortable tropes makes lying easier. Lying repeatedly can create an impression of conviction and access to facts and sources that are not known to everyone. Repeat a lie from somewhere else, and you can claim that you have a source.

The virus is spreading fast; hundreds of thousands are ill, thousands are dying. Lives depend on accurate and timely information. As Josep Borrell, head of the European External Action Service, said “Disinformation is playing with people’s lives. Disinformation can kill.”
