8TH Ministerial Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDCs)

Accelerating industrialization in LDCs

Lessons learned and innovative approaches

2 November 2019, 9:00 – 18:00

The Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The 8th Ministerial Conference on LDCs aims to develop new strategies for industrialization beyond 2020, helping them accomplish their national development goals. This includes enhancing UNIDO’s mandate and services provided to LDCs at the ministerial level, in context to contemporary programmatic frameworks e.g.: the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA), the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III), the South-South and Triangular cooperation and the UNDS Reform.

Intended as a high-level event, the Conference is expected to be attended by 250 participants as observers and potential UNIDO Partners. The Conference is divided into a morning and afternoon session which features Ministers and Representatives of UN Organizations as panelists, enabling thematic discussions and interventions to take place.

The Conference takes place at a special time for the United Nations Programme of Action for the LDCs. The Fifth United Nations Conference (LDC-V) process will be launched towards the end of the year 2019. The process will culminate in LDC-V on the LDCs to take place in Doha, Qatar, in 2021. As a pre LDC-V Conference, the event will feed into the process of elaborating a new Programme of Action, offering UNIDO a unique opportunity to have ISID/SDG 9 and IDDA III reflected on strategies and implementing new measures for sustainable industrial developments of the LDCs in the next decade (2021-2030).

The Mohammed bin Rashid Initiative for Global Prosperity, an initiative of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS), invites all media representatives to attend the launch of the 2nd Cohort of the Global Maker Challenge at 12:00 in the main committee room, followed by a lunch near the exhibition. The invitation is attached.
