On the 24th of October, the Ghana Institute of Journalism in Accra opened its doors to all students who are interested in the EU Erasmus+ programme. Deputy EU Head of Mission, Mr. Pieter Smidt van Gelder – himself an Erasmus alumnus – welcomed the students and gave an introduction to the Erasmus+ Programme after the welcoming by the Deputy Rector Dr. Modestus Fosu.

Current and former Erasmus alumni, from the Ghanaian branch of the Erasmus Mundus Association, energized the room with their stories on how the programme enriched their lives, opened up their world and provided them with lasting friendships all over the world.

Students reading various courses, such as media studies and public relations, had the opportunity to ask questions and were given a crash course on the do's and don'ts during the application process.

The session focussed especially on the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) scholarships. Over the recent years, Ghana has developed a strong track record on the EMJMD front: Over 125 students have benefitted from the scholarships since 2014, making Ghana the 3rd biggest sender state on the African continent.

The EMJMDs award EU-funded scholarships to Master students from around the world, covering tuition, travel and a living allowance. The programmes last from one to two years during which students study in at least two different European countries, and obtain  joint, double, or multiple degrees. In September 2019, 32 talented Ghanaian students started their European adventure at one of the participating universities across Europe.

Over 250 students attended the info session. They are now well prepared to seize opportunities and are helping to build bridges between the two continents.
