EU4Environment aims to help the EU partner countries to preserve and better use their natural capital, increase people's environmental well-being, and grasp new development opportunities. For example, enterprises, in particular SMEs, will be further helped supported to save energy, water, and materials. Leading international experts will advise on issues of environmental governance, such as assurance of compliance with laws, more effective use of public finance, or building of administrative capacity. Opportunities offered by a more environmentally-friendly forest management will be studied and implemented together with local communities.
These and many other areas will become part of a country-specific work plan with clear targets and activities. The launch event offered an opportunity for government officials and the representatives of various stakeholder groups to discuss priorities and next steps for “EU4Environment” implementation in Georgia until 2022.
“The European Union is a front-runner in environmental protection. Through this new action, we will help Georgia better protect its wonderful nature, manage environmental risks and therefore increase people's environmental well-being" said Alexandre Darras, Sector Coordinator on Connectivity, Energy, Environment and Climate Change at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia
The “EU4Environment” will continue cooperation carried out within the framework of several EU-funded initiatives, such as “Greening economies in the Eastern Neighbourhood” (EaP GREEN), the Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG), and the Emerald Network programmes. It will support efforts by Georgia to bring the green economy and environmental action to a level matching current challenges. With a budget of some EUR 20 million for all six countries, EU4Environment will be carried out in 2019-2022 with implementation support by five international partners that have a leading role in greening economies worldwide: OECD, UNIDO, UN Environment, UNECE and the World Bank.
