On 24 January 2019, the Senate hosted a meeting of the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sodik Safoev with the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, Ambassador Peter Burian.

During the meeting, a high assessment was given to the results of the official visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Germany, which serves as an important impulse to strengthen political dialogue and develop mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Germany on a bilateral and multilateral basis.

The parties emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations on the basis of the new European Union Strategy for Central Asia, which is being developed at the initiative of Germany, both through the European Union - Central Asia, and in the format of Germany - Central Asia.

The sides discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral political and trade-economic cooperation between the European Union and Uzbekistan, in particular, the issues of strengthening the role of parliament and the development of parliamentarism, enhancing bilateral contacts of the European Parliament and the Oliy Majlis, increasing international cooperation, and working out a new agreement on expanded partnership between the EU and Uzbekistan.

The meeting also discussed the issue of our country’s accession to GSP +, the general system of preferences, preferential customs tariffs applied by developed countries for goods exported from developing countries in order to promote their economic growth and increase their export potential. An exchange of views on topical regional and international issues also took place.

The sides expressed a common opinion that the current visit of the EU ambassador was a demonstration of further strengthening and expanding interaction between the European Union and Uzbekistan in key areas of mutual interest: the rule of law, security, energy, water, education and human rights.

During his visit to Uzbekistan, Ambassador Peter Burian will take part in the international conference “European Union - Central Asia”, which will be held in Tashkent and is dedicated to cooperation in the field of environment, climate change and the use of water resources.
