High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met today with the newly elected President of Georgia, Salomé Zourabichvili.
They discussed the excellent state of relations between the European Union and Georgia, which is illustrated by the fact that President Zourabichvili's first visit abroad is to Brussels.
High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini and President Zourabichvili referred to the recent high-level meeting between the Georgian government and members of the European Commission, which took place on 21 November last year, as a tangible sign of the development of a strong relationship. The two recalled the importance of continuing to discuss ways to strengthen EU-Georgia cooperation in several sectors in the framework of the Association Agreement.
Georgia has made good progress on reforms; High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini stressed the importance of continuing reform efforts and reiterated the EU's commitment to continue supporting them.
They had a productive exchange on key issues in the region, where the EU continues to devote high attention to stability and democratic development. Federica Mogherini confirmed the EU’s strong commitment tosupport the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders and to contribute to conflict resolution. Regional stability and increased resilience of our partners is one of the main goals of the European Neighbourhood Policy, the Eastern Partnership and of the EU's Global Strategy.
