On Saturday, 13 October, citizens of Batumi and surrounding villages celebrated Europe Day together with the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. The event included a surprise musical guest.

Over 8,000 local citizens visited Batumi Boulevard last Saturday to celebrate Europe Day in Batumi. The event was already the fifth regional Europe Day in 2018 with the Delegation of the European Union traveling to the regions of Georgia to bring Europe closer to Georgian citizens.

Visitors from Batumi and surrounding villages were invited to learn about the history and diversity of the European Union, discover concrete examples of EU support to Georgia and participate in other fun and informative activities under the motto "Our Colourful Europe".

The event was officially opened by Tornike Rizhvadze, Head of the Adjara Government, and Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia. Mr. Hartzell and Mr. Rizhvadze then took a tour visiting the various programme stands designed to inform citizens about EU assistance to Georgia.

Children participated in various games and learning activities, meanwhile young people were invited to a street basketball competition. Several local teams competed and achieved impressive results.

Europe Day ended with a concert by Natia Todua and Vakis Parki. Ambassador Carl Hartzell surprised everyone by joining the band on stage and playing the drums to AC/DC's "You shook me all night long". Check out the full video below.

Europe Day celebrates peace and unity between the today 28 different EU member countries.  It marks the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" made in Paris on May 9th, 1950, which set out a vision for a new form of political cooperation in Europe which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. This proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is today the European Union.

This year the European Union already held five regional Europe Day events in Georgia, one more is planed on 3 November in Marneuli. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to keep up to date.
