Last weekend over 1,000 local citizens came out to celebrate Europe Day in Lagodekhi together with the Delegation of the European Union in Georgia. The event held in a charming, green park was the third regional Europe Day after celebrations in Zugdidi and Kutaisi.
Lagodekhians were invited to learn about the history and diversity of the European Union, discover concrete examples of EU support to Georgia and participate in other fun and informative activities under the motto "Our Colourful Europe".
The event was officially opened by Jondo Mdivnishvili, Mayor of Lagodekhi, Guram Macharashvili, Member of Parliament, and Lilian Todter, Attaché at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.
Children participated in various games and learning activities, meanwhile young men and women were invited to a street basketball competition. 8 male teams and 4 female teams competed in Lagodekhi and achieved impressive results. Europe Day ended with a dynamic concert of the band "Frani" with the sun setting over a crowd of dancing citizens and visitors of Lagodekhi.
Background
Europe Day celebrates peace and unity between the today 28 different EU member countries. It marks the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" made in Paris on May 9th, 1950, which set out a vision for a new form of political cooperation in Europe which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. This proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is today the European Union.
This spring the European Union held three regional events in Georgia. More events are planned for autumn, we will keep you updated.
