On Saturday, 19 May, the Delegation of the European Union celebrated Europe Day in Zugdidi together with over 2,000 local citizens.

Past weekend the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia travelled to Zugdidi for the first event in a series of regional Europe Days. Under the motto "Our Colourful Europe" Zugdidians were invited to learn about the history and diversity of the European Union, discover concrete examples of EU support to Georgia and participate in other fun and informative activities.

The event was officially opened by Lasha Gogia, Mayor of Zugdidi, Levan Shonia, Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, and Mikolaj Bekasiak, Communications Officer at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia.

While children participated in various games and learning activities, young people were invited to a street basketball competition. Fourteen local teams competed under the bright summer sun and achieved impressive results, especially considering the high temperature throughout the day. Later in the afternoon citizens were invited to a screening of an Italian film.

Background

Europe Day celebrates peace and unity between the today 28 different EU member countries.  It marks the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" made in Paris on May 9th, 1950, which set out a vision for a new form of political cooperation in Europe which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. This proposal  is considered to be the beginning of what is today the European Union.

This year the European Union plans to hold four regional events in total. Watch for our reports from Kutaisi, Lagodekhi and Akhaltsikhe.
