On Saturday, 5 May over 15,000 people came together in Tbilisi to celebrate Europe Day, held under the motto "Our Colourful Europe"

On the occasion of Europe Day, Tbilisi's Rike Park was transformed into "Eurovillage", with 19 Member States of the European Union presenting their countries and showcasing their cultures to visitors. Tbilisians and their children were invited to participate in unique games and informative activities. Music, dances and songs were brought to a daytime stage from all over Europe, while children were attentively listening to fairytales from European countries.

The celebrations were officially opened by the President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikheil Janelidze, Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, and Ambassador of the European Union, Janos Herman.

Later in the afternoon a street basketball competition took place on Europe Day with the European Union presenting the medals to the winning team.

In the evening many inhabitants and guests of Tbilisi came to dance to the lively performances of Natia Todua and Nino Katamadze & Insight. Europe Day was closed with colourful fireworks over the Peace Bridge, lit up in the colours of the European flag.

Background:

Europe Day celebrates peace and unity between the today 28 different EU member countries.  It marks the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" made in Paris on May 9th, 1950, which set out a vision for a new form of political cooperation in Europe which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. This proposal  is considered to be the beginning of what is today the European Union.
