Gori launches EU pilot project under Mayors for Economic Growth initiative

Today, there was a public presentation of European Union’s “Mayors for Economic Growth” Pioneer Projects: “Empowering Local Economic Opportunities for Sustainable Growth” was held at Gori Municipality Cultural Centre.

The attending society were from high-level officials of Gori Municipality, representatives of the Administration of State Representative – Governor of Shida Kartli, representatives of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia and “Mayors for Economic Growth (M4EG)” Secretariat, as well as, representatives of local small and medium businesses.

During the presentation representatives of the local government talked about the importance of the project. The Mayor of Gori Municipality Konstantine Tavzarashvili thanked to the European Union for financing such a large and significant project.

EU representative Dominic Pepeenheim noted that the project proposal of Gori Municipality was totally in line with the EU requirements for project financing and they are the true winner with Bolnisi and Tbilisi municipalities.

Team leader of the "Mayors for Economic Growth" Initiative - Peter Corsby presented a symbolic certificate to the Mayor Konstantine Tavzarashvili, as a member of the M4EG club and wished success to the municipality during the project implementation.

Gori Municipality received 1 800 000 GEL of grant funding from the European Union for implementing the project. The total budget of the project is 2 087 991, 36 GEL, Gori Municipality co-finances the project with 287 991, 36 GEL. The European Commission awarded Gori Municipality during the Call for Proposals within the framework of the Mayors for Economic Growth Initiative.

Duration of the project is 28 months and it will be completed in 2020. Goal of the project is to contribute to creation of new local economic development opportunities for sustainable economic growth in Gori Municipality. The action aims to support small and medium entrepreneurs (SME) in tourism sector through improving their capacities, creating new opportunities for them and building local partnership between the public and private (P&P) sectors; to develop youth/students’ skills in tourism business to increase their employability and to make the city more attractive for the visitors and attract more investments in the tourism sector through creation and development the tourism related hard and soft infrastructure.

The following activities will be carried out within the project: set up a complex of tourism infrastructure, i.e.: rehabilitation of park and exhibition hall in the city centre; Set up an area for open café in the park; Open a tourism information centre; Set up car parking area and sanitary facilities abroad the tourism areas; Build a cycling infrastructure in the historical part and city centre and organize a bicycle renting service; Set up an area for selling souvenirs and other tourism related local products; Open workshops for manufacturing national handicrafts and food in Gori Ethnographic Museum, where working process will be shown to visitors and products will be sold; To set up training facilities; To work out special training, internship and business consultancy service programmes; and to establish training, internship and business consultancy service that will be accessible for free of charge during the project implementation period.

Mayors for Economic Growth (M4EG) is a new initiative of the European Union, which was set in operation in January 2017 within the Eastern Partnership framework. Main goal of the initiatives is support Mayors and municipalities of the Eastern Partnership countries to become active facilitators for economic growth and job creation at the local level. M4EG Secretariat is the main executive body in charge of the Initiative implementation in the region - http://www.m4eg.eu.
