Results of EU-funded “Local Action Group Kazbegi” Presented in Stepantsminda

On 27th of September, in the Teka House in Stepantsminda, non-governmental organization People in Need (PIN) organized a presentation of the results and achievements within the EU-funded rural development project “Local Action Group Kazbegi”. The event was held in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Program for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD).

The project introduces the European rural development model - LEADER approach in the Kazbegi municipality and contributes to the reduction of poverty and promotes participatory mechanisms in local decision-making processes. The individual business initiatives supported by small grants became positive models to follow, brought innovations to remote areas and improved the quality of life of its residents.

The event was officially opened by the PIN Country Director, Ms. Lauriane Gauny and the Governor of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Mr. Levan Zautashvili. The Project Manager Ms. Salome Bakashvili presented the results and achievements of the two-year activities under the project.

At the first stage of the project, PIN conducted an active information campaign with the communities of Kazbegi municipality, helped establish the Local Action Group (LAG) and drafted the Strategy of Local Development along with its Action Plan. Next, following the priorities defined by the Local Development Strategy, PIN announced grant contests, in the scope of which the EU funding was approved for 63 development initiatives, including: 7 initiatives from agricultural sector, 33 from tourism and non-agricultural businesses, 12 from public infrastructure, and 11 initiatives from education, sport and culture sectors.    

Representatives of regional and municipal government, ENPARD partner organisations, project beneficiaries, media and other interested parties attended the event. During the event, the exhibition of several products and services offered by the beneficiaries of Local Action Group (LAG) supported projects was presented and the screening of a short video about LAG Kazbegi took place.

The EU is supporting rural development in Georgia through its ENPARD Programme. Implemented since 2013 with a total budget of EUR 102 million, the main goal of ENPARD is to reduce rural poverty. More information on ENPARD is available at: www.enpard.ge
