Text

I was pleased to welcome the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, in Brussels today. We discussed the progress in our bilateral relationship following the signature of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Georgia in June of last year and the preparations of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga. The security situation in the region was also an important part of our agenda.

We stressed the importance of the implementation of the Association Agreement, including its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, so that it can fully deliver on its potential. Reform agenda in such vital areas as economy, rule of law and judiciary are key, as is fostering a political climate with respect for opposition and cross-party dialogue. Implementing these reforms in a sustainable way will transform and modernise Georgia, to the benefit of its citizens.

I reaffirmed the EU's commitment to Georgia's territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, and reiterated that we consider the recently signed agreement between the Abkhazia "de facto" authorities and the Russian Federation a violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We also discussed the issue of visa liberalisation, where the expert missions are currently taking place within the framework of the second round of the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan.
