Are you a citizen of one of the Member States of the European Union in The Gambia?

This page aims to inform you about your right to consular protection, and on how you can benefit from consular protection in The Gambia.

Consular protection is the assistance an EU country provides to its citizens in case they need assistance abroad. Typically, consular protection is of relevance in the following cases:

  • A need for emergency travel documents;
  • A serious accident or serious illness;
  • Relief and repatriation in case of an emergency;
  • Assistance in case you are victim of a crime;
  • Arrest or detention;
  • Death while abroad.

Are you a national of an EU Member State, and are you in need of consular protection in The Gambia?

  • You may contact your Diplomatic Mission in The Gambia and/or the Honorary Consul, which will be able to provide consular protection.
  • If your country has no resident Diplomatic Mission in The Gambia/Honorary Consul, or in case they are not in a position to provide consular protection, you can turn to another EU Member State’s Diplomatic Mission for consular protection.

For more information on consular protection, see the dedicated pages on the websites of the EEAS, the European Commission and the Council of the EU).

Indeed, any EU citizen abroad whose own country has no local representation is entitled to receive consular protection from the diplomatic or consular authorities of any other EU Member State. In this case, EU citizens are entitled to benefit from consular protection under the same conditions as the nationals of that other EU Member State.

You will find the contact details of the Diplomatic Missions present in The Gambia and details of the Honorary Consuls who can provide consular protection in The Gambia in the list below.

Please note that the EU Delegation to The Gambia cannot provide direct consular assistance.

As an EU citizen, you can take the following steps to inform yourself before you travel and during your travel and stay in The Gambia, for example:

By following the travel advice issued by your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; When abroad, you may register with your Embassy or Consulate, indicate your whereabouts and the duration of your stay; Keep an electronic copy of your travel documents, subscribing to a travel insurance or saving crisis contact details.
