The Regional Housing Programme

A home for the elderly and adults with disabilities, funded by the European Union, will be built on the site of the former military complex at the foot of Mount Trebjesa in Niksic. Housing units for 104 persons will be constructed as part of the EU Regional Housing Programme with an investment worth €4.8 million.

At the ceremony marking the beginning of construction, the EU Ambassador to Montenegro Aivo Orav said that the Regional Housing Programme is a great example of how the European Union, together with its partners, can change people's lives, build new homes, and help them overcome the consequences of conflict in the 1990's.

“The Programme is also important since it fosters regional cooperation, good neighbourly relations, which all lead to lasting stability and prosperity, while also addressing difficult issues and demonstrating commitment to the principle of solidarity. When we talk about human rights and fundamental freedoms, securing a decent life and housing for all citizens is the main objective of any state,” said Orav.

The Mayor of Niksic, Veselin Grbovic, noted that the home for the elderly will provide those in need a place to live as well as jobs for the newly-hired staff. The former ruined military barracks will be turned into functional and modern facilities.

The Prime Minister, Dusko Markovic, said that, through the Regional Housing Programme, important projects related to the accommodation of persons from vulnerable categories have been completed in Montenegro.

The project in Niksic, with a total value of around €4.8 million, 70% of which is funded by the RHP, should open its doors in 2021. The new facilities will be specifically designed for people with reduced mobility and will consist of 52 rooms, various activity rooms and a library.
