Suva, Fiji (February 7) – The third meeting of the Regional Steering Committee for the Pacific (RSCP) for the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) Pacific Regional Indicative Programme (PRIP) will take place tomorrow and Friday (8-9th February 2018). The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) will host it in collaboration with the European Union (EU).

The meeting will be co-chaired by Dame Meg Taylor, the Secretary General of PIFS and Regional Authorising Officer (RAO) and Pierre Amilhat, the Director responsible for development cooperation with Asia, Central Asia, Middle East/Gulf and the Pacific at the EU. In the Pacific region, the PIFS holds the role of fostering regional cooperation, which has been duly mandated by the Forum Leaders to coordinate and assist in implementing the decisions of the Leaders including facilitating the delivery of development assistance decisions.

The two-day meeting will gather together government representatives (National Authorising Officers) from the Pacific island countries, regional development partners including CROP (Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific) agencies, the United Nations and international financial organisations. This consultative platform aims to ensure effective and result-oriented implementation of the EU-Pacific regional programme. Under this programme, the EU supports the Pacific at a regional level for a total of EUR 166 million (FJD 350 million) in areas such as ocean governance and protection, waste management, public finance management, addressing root causes of gender inequality and violence against women, trade, investment and promotion of the private sector.

The meeting will be an opportunity to reflect on the future of EU-Pacific relations too. The Chairperson of the Committee of Pacific Ambassadors in Brussels, Samoan Ambassador Dr. Pa'olelei Luteru, will lead internal discussions with National Authorising Officers on preparing  negotiations on a new partnership between the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific countries post-2020.

Ends.
