On this first International Day commemorating the victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief, we pay tribute to all those around the world who lost their lives and suffered attacks because of their religion or belief. Persecution as a response to religious belief or affiliation, or lack thereof, is a violation of international law and requires joint work to combat it.

On 13 – 16 August, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, Christian Leffler led the EU delegation to the 50th Pacific Islands Forum leaders' meetings in Funafuti. The Partners Dialogue session and bilateral meetings with the Pacific countries’ leaders and senior officials in the PIF summit margins provided the possibility to address the strategic priorities, which the EU supports and wants to see reflected in the future Pacific - EU partnership.

The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA) is a €60 million initiative of the European Union (EU) and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States to improve the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources through the better use and monitoring of information and capacity development on management and governance.
In this framework, a €20 million global grant facility to support on-ground actions (grants up to €400,000) is created to support partners and communities to improve the effectiveness and livelihood benefits of marine and terrestrial protected and conserved areas.

Funafuti, Tuvalu, 14/08/19 – The European Union (EU) has strengthened Tuvalu's capacity to sustainably manage waste by providing the low-lying atoll Pacific nation with its first waste Transfer Station in the capital, Funafuti today.
