Overview of the human rights and democracy situation: In 2018, basic human rights were respected in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), such as right to assembly and freedom of speech, and no gross human rights’ abuses were identified. There were however human rights concerns relating to domestic violence and trafficking in human beings that still demanded attention. Other human rights issues include problems related to climate change.

Although the government of Solomon Islands has yet to enact a comprehensive human rights policy, a number of improvements took place during 2018. However, successful implementation of the Acts remains a challenge.

At a time when human rights are challenged on a daily basis with many attempts to undermine the universality and indivisibility of human rights, the EU has remained at the forefront of the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy, be it in international forums, bilaterally with governments or through concrete support to the civil society.

The speech below was delivered by the Acting Head of Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Mr. Corrado Pampaloni on the occasion of the European Day Official Reception at the Fiji Museum on May 9th, 2019.
