On 3rd May 2019, the EU Delegation to The Gambia hosted its annual Europe Day reception which took place at the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute. This evening marked the culmination of the EU Week of Culture, Arts and Sports which had consisted of a women's football tournament and a painting competition of minivans ("gele-geles") focusing on youth empowerment under the broader theme of "deciding our future".

On this occasion, the EU Ambassador, Attila Lajos, as well as the Gambian Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Momodou Tangara, delivered speeches which highlighted the EU-Gambia partnership and the determination to work together to face common challenges. The evening was graced by performances in music, dance and poetry and the winner of the "Paint my gele-gele" competition was announced after all guests had the opportunity to vote for their favourite. This was a moment to celebrate Europe Day alongside the artistic talents of the Gambian youth!
