The Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador and Pro Tempore President of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Hugo Martínez, and Managing Director for the Americas of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Edita Hrdá, met on December 1, 2017, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, with the objective of discussing, among other aspects, the future of the bi-regional relationship between CELAC and the European Union.
In this framework, the officials recognized the various bi-regional efforts made to strengthen the historical, political, economic, social and cultural ties between CELAC and the European Union, on the basis of a dynamic and constructive common agenda.
In this regard and considering the importance of continuing and strengthening these ties and reinforcing the political dialogue between both regions, Minister Martínez and Director Hrdá agreed to support the proposal to celebrate a CELAC-EU Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, in Brussels as soon as possible in 2018.
Likewise, they agreed on the validity and relevance of the central theme of the meeting "CELAC-EU: Building bridges and strengthening our partnership to face global challenges", as guideline for the dialogue and reflection of the meeting, in which CELAC and the EU have, not only the opportunity, but also the responsibility to speak out and to influence positively the current international scenario, with a much stronger impact if undertaken jointly.
They also expressed their confidence that the CELAC-EU Meeting of Foreign Ministers will contribute to strengthening the bi-regional relationship, so they encouraged to initiate as soon as possible the negotiation of the text of the Declaration of the ministerial meeting on the basis of the draft Declaration prepared for the Summit, in order to have enough time to deliver a document that reflects the objectives and commitments to be jointly undertaken in the next years. They also underlined the importance of updating the text of the CELAC-EU Action Plan.
Finally, they ratified the strategic character of the CELAC-EU association, recognizing the opportunities that presents for the boosting of trade and investments, as instruments of the development of both regions.
