An official announcement of the awarding of the grants took place at Port Moresby at a grant awards ceremony on October 20, with the grants awarded to three organisations; the 'International Organization for Migration' (IOM) with co-implementing partners; 'the Department of Justice & Attorney General' (DJAG) and the 'CIMC-Family & Sexual Violence Action Committee' (FSVAC)', 'Child Fund Papua New Guinea' and the 'National Council of Women' (NCW) are made possible through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights.

“The European Union is built on the foundation of democratic principles, human rights and rule of law. European Union has a strong engagement with the government and the people of Papua New Guinea to ensure that these principles are respected, promoted and protected,” said European Union Ambassador to Papua New Guinea HE Ioannis Giogkarakis-Argyropoulos.

The consortium including IOM, DJAG, and FSVAC will use the grant to strengthen prosecution efforts and protection measures to combat trafficking in persons in Papua New Guinea. The project they will implement aims to increase the technical and management capacities of law enforcement and key frontline officials on conducting victim-centred investigations, and the judiciary, including judges, magistrates and prosecutors on the application of anti-trafficking legislations.

Child Fund Papua New Guinea will use the grant to implement a proposed action to strengthen the community based justice system in Papua New Guinea, in particular, in the Central Province. Under this initiative judicial staff i.e. district and village court officials and other front line workers like the police officers in the three districts of Abau, Kairuku Hiri and Rigo in Central Province will undergo various capacity building training on child protection. The proposed initiative also aims to establish a community based child protection and referral mechanism.

The support to the National Council of Women is for the implementation of the 2013 National Council of Women Act (amended) which will involve capacity building through training, for improved coordination by the National Council of Women Executives and Secretariat staff as well as awareness of the Act.

The National Council of Women is the women's peak body in Papua New Guinea for representing the views and rights of women, at all levels of society, and it is important that its efforts to strengthen its institutional structures are supported so that it can continue to advocate effectively for the women of Papua New Guinea.

The three organisations will each receive a grant of up to K1.1 million to implement each of the proposed projects. The grant award ceremony was held today at Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby and attended by representatives of the implementing partners and other invited guests.
