Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific

About the EU Delegation for the Pacific

The Delegation represents the EU in the Pacific region, as part of the bloc's unified diplomatic corps – the European External Action Service

With full diplomatic privileges and immunities and an ambassador (Head of Delegation), the Delegation functions much like an embassy.

In all matters pertaining to the EU, we work closely with the diplomatic missions of the EU member countries.

Indeed, issues like trade promotion and consular matters are handled solely by these national embassies, consulates (and sometimes tourism offices).

Main work of the Delegation

  • promote and defend the values and interests of the EU and its member countries across the Pacific region
  • further EU-Pacific relations, bilaterally and regionally
  • prepare and oversee the implementation of development cooperation in the Pacific region
  • ensure effective policy coordination with EU countries present in the region
  • keep EU headquarters informed of developments in the Pacific that are relevant to EU policies
  • promote knowledge and understanding of Pacific countries in the EU, and vice versa

Bula.

I am delighted you have taken the time to visit the web-site of the EU Delegation to the Pacific.

Our website is intended to serve as a gateway to the EU, its institutions and policies. Here you will find an overview of the relations between the EU and the Pacific countries and territories that the Delegation works with. It is also a source of information on funding opportunitiesas well as on scholarships to study in Europe.

As you will see when surfing through this website, the EU and the Pacific countries cooperate closely in an increasing number of areas, such as political and security dialogue, environment, climate change, sustainable growth, research and technology, higher education, trade, and human rights.   A cornerstone of the Delegation’s work is building bridges between people, businesses, civil society organisations, government agencies, besides raising cultural understanding of the EU in the Pacific.

The Delegation is responsible for EU relations with most of the Pacific: Fiji (where we are based), the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Niue, Marshall Islands, and Nauru, as well as French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, and Pitcairn.

The Pacific is important for the EU, and the EU is important for Pacific: we are the world's biggest market and trading bloc, as well as the world's biggest provider of development assistance. Despite the slow recovery of our economy, the EU remains the largest economy in the world, with 500 million consumers.

The EU has an inclusive approach to democracy, human rights and the rule of law that we are keen to share with partners around the world.  The EU was very proud to win the Nobel Peace prize in 2012.  We are keen to share the benefits of our experience.

Enjoy your visit on our website. For any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

All the best,

Andrew Jacobs
