The death of the army captain, Rafael Acosta Arévalo, while he was in custody of the Venezuelan security forces, is another stark illustration of the arbitrary nature of the judicial system in the country and of the lack of guarantees and rights for those under detention.
We express our deep condolences to the family and friends of captain Arévalo. His death cannot go unnoticed nor unpunished. A full and independent investigation is necessary so that those responsible are held accountable.
The European Union fully supports the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ efforts to ensure that the human rights of all Venezuelans are fully protected.
